Muhammara (Red Pepper Dip)

Hummus has become one of our favorite dips and we have all had Baba Ganoush but have you tried Muhammara? Muhammara is a hot red pepper dip that originated from Aleppo, Syria and apart from being vegan and delicious it’s also super easy to make! Muhammara has got it all, it’s spicy yet sweet, thick but creamy and fits perfectly on a mezze platter with some Pita Bread, Hummus, Babaganoush or with meat/ fish. Something delicious you can also make are sandwiches with Muhammara and grilled vegetables.

When making the Muhammara make sure you don’t mix the ingredients too much - you want a nice paste a not something too smooth. Also very important is the Pomegranate Molasses - if you’re going to make Muhammara we 100% recommend you buy it as making it from Pomegranate Juice is a bit more time consuming.

Cook Time: 30 Minutes

Ingredients for 2 people:

  • Red Bell Peppers - 360 g

  • Bread Crumbs - 15 g

  • Pomegranate Molasses - 35 ml (you can also make this yourself using Pomegranate Juice but we do not recommend it)

  • Walnuts - 55 g

  • Garlic - 1 clove

  • Lemon Juice - 2 Tbs

  • Olive Oil - 1 Tbs

  • Chili Flakes - 2 Tbs (we use this one)

  • Cumin (Ground) - 1/2 teaspoon

  • Salt - to taste

  • To decorate:

  • White Sesame Seeds

  • Coriander

Preparation:

  1. We start the Muhammara preparation by pre-heating the oven to 220°C (450 F). Put the bell peppers on a baking sheet and roast them for 25 minutes (or until they get nice and blackish).

  2. Once the time is done take them out, wrap them in aluminum and leave them to rest for 15 minutes. When they have cooled down you can peel the skin and seeds and put the meat aside.

  3. Now place your pomegranate molasses, bread crumbs, chili flakes, garlic, cumin, salt, walnuts, olive oil and lemon juice in a bowl and mix with a hand mixer or in a food processor until smooth. Add the roasted peppers and mix a bit more. Don’t over mix as we want the texture to be smooth yet hummus like (not like a soup).

  4. You can add more salt or chili flakes if you want your muhammara to be spicier, or lemon if you feel like it’s missing acidity.
