Zürich is a great base for exploring some of the most beautiful destinations in Switzerland. Within a few hours by train or car, you can explore charming villages, historic cities, and stunning natural scenery. Whether it's a day trip to a nearby mountain for skiing or hiking, a visit to a nearby city for culture and history, or a relaxing day by the lake, there are plenty of options for visitors to enjoy. Some popular day trips from Zurich include visiting Lucerne, Bern, and Basel for their charming old towns and cultural attractions, or exploring the nearby mountains like Flumserberg or Braunwald for stunning views and outdoor activities.

Lucerne

Located just an hour away from Zurich by train, Lucerne is a picturesque city known for its medieval architecture, beautiful lake, and stunning mountain views. Spend the day wandering the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, crossing the iconic Chapel Bridge, and enjoying the views from the top of Mount Pilatus.

Bern

The Swiss capital of Bern is just over an hour away from Zurich by train. This charming city is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture, including the famous Zytglogge clock tower and the Bear Pit, home to the city's beloved bear mascots. Be sure to also check out the Rose Garden for stunning views of the city and the Aare River.

Basel

Located just an hour away from Zurich by train, Basel is a cultural hub known for its museums and art galleries. Visit the Kunstmuseum Basel to see works by some of the world's greatest artists, or check out the Fondation Beyeler, housed in a stunning building designed by architect Renzo Piano. Konstanz

Located just across the border in Germany, the city of Konstanz is an easy day trip from Zurich. This charming town is situated on the shores of Lake Constance and is known for its beautiful old town, charming cafes, and historic cathedral. Be sure to also take a stroll along the lakefront and check out the nearby Island of Mainau, home to a stunning botanical garden.

St. Gallen

Located just over an hour away from Zurich by train, the city of St. Gallen is known for its beautiful Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visit the abbey's impressive library, which contains over 170,000 books, or take a stroll through the charming Old Town, with its well-preserved medieval architecture and charming cafes.

Located just outside Lucerne, Mount Pilatus is one of the most popular day trips from Zurich. To get there, take a train from Zurich to Lucerne, and then hop on a bus to the base of the mountain. From there, you can take a cogwheel train or gondola up to the top of the mountain for stunning views of the surrounding landscape. There are also plenty of hiking trails, a rope park, and a toboggan run to enjoy.

Mount Rigi

Another great option for a day trip from Zurich is Mount Rigi, located in the heart of Switzerland. To get there, take a train from Zurich to Arth-Goldau, and then switch to the cogwheel train that will take you up to the top of the mountain. Once there, you can take in the breathtaking views, hike along the many trails, or even go for a swim in the refreshing mountain lakes.

Jungfraujoch

It's a bit further away but it’s well worth the journey if you're looking for an unforgettable day trip. To get there, take a train from Zurich to Interlaken, then switch to the cogwheel train that will take you up the mountain. At 11,333 feet above sea level, Jungfraujoch is the highest railway station in Europe and offers incredible views of mountains and glaciers. You can also visit the Ice Palace, go dog sledding, or even take a helicopter tour.

Mount Titlis

Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Mount Titlis is another great option for a day trip from Zurich. To get there, take a train from Zurich to Engelberg, and then switch to the cable car that will take you up to the top of the mountain. Once there, you can enjoy the stunning views, take a ride on the famous Titlis Cliff Walk, or even go skiing or snowboarding if you're visiting during the winter months.

Mount Säntis

Located in the northeastern part of Switzerland, Mount Säntis is a bit further away than some of the other options on this list, but still easily doable as a day trip. To get there, take a train from Zurich to St. Gallen, and then switch to the cable car that will take you up to the top of the mountain. Once there, you can take in the stunning views, hike along the many trails, or even try your hand at paragliding.

Flumserberg

Located about 1.5 hours away from Zurich by train and bus, Flumserberg is a hidden gem in the Swiss Alps that is popular with locals but not as well-known to tourists. Activities here include skiing, snowboarding, and hiking, depending on the season. Take the cable car up to the top of the mountain for stunning views of the surrounding area, or take a stroll around the serene Obersee Lake.

Klosters

Klosters is a small, picturesque village located about 2 hours away from Zurich by train. While it is known for its skiing and snowboarding in the winter, it is also a great destination for hiking and mountain biking in the summer.
