Delicious Places to Eat in Basel - Top 9 (2023 Edition)
Basel is a foodie’s paradise, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from no matter what you’re in the mood for. In this blog post, we will explore nine of the best places to eat in Basel, Switzerland. From traditional Swiss fare to international cuisine, there is something for everyone!
The first time I went to Basel I was shocked to find so many incredible Michelin guide restaurants and so much creativity and I decided that I would have to visit the city and its restaurants at least 6 times a year to try the new dishes and see what new restaurants Basel had to offer.
While in Basel make sure to try some of their specialties: Basler Läckerli (head to the Jakob's Basler Leckerly Manufaktur), Magenbrot, Mässmogge, Rosekiechli, Basler Rahmtäfeli, Brunsli, their Cheese and Onion Tart and Salm.
Restaurant Stucki - Tanja Grandits
The food at Tanja Grandis’ Restaurant Stucki is absolutely mind blowing. There is an eye for detail but a playfulness at the same time that will really mesmerise you. The aroma 9 course menu is CHF 265/pp.
Tip: If you want the experience but don’t want to spend too much try their Lunch Menu for CHF 95/pp

roots
Roots is one of those places where fun meets delicious cooking and an amazing staff. The restaurant has 2 Michelin starts and the 5 course menu will set you back CHF 152/pp. We think the price / quality at roots is absolutely top notch.
Tip: Go for the 6 course menu - it’s only CHF 10 more and you’ll be absolutely satisfied at the end of the experience.

Zum Wilde Maa
If you want delicious regional food at decent prices head to Zum Wilde Maa where they have both the set menus (the 4 course for CHF 89/pp) or the a la carte. The service is super personable and the food along with the presentation is divine.
Tip: Try their Bolognese it’s incredible

St. Alban Stübli
St. Alban Stübli surprised us as we did not expect the food to be this good! I fell in love with the Topinambur soup and the amazing staff. In the summer they have a super cute terrace outside.
Tip: At lunch they have a delicious 3 course menu for CHF 45 /pp

Roter Bären
The atmosphere at Roter Bären is something absolutely amazing. The cocktails are imaginative and the food is delicious (they have a rotating menu with I love as I can always come back and try something new / seasonal). The 3 course menu is CHF81 / pp and definitely worth it.

Trattoria Antichi Sapori
The quality of the food and the attention to detail are something you’ll find at Trattoria Antichi Sapori. Th restaurant is quite small and the atmosphere is super cozy. The prices are also very fair for the quality.
Tip: Their Agnolotti are amazing

Restaurant Bel Etage (im Teufelhof)
Restaurant Bel Etage has delicious food, and a perfectly matching wine selection - it’s definitely more on the fancy side and their summer terrace is incredibly beautiful. Their menus start from CHF 115.
Tip: Try one of their meat dishes as they are impressive

Taverne Johann
I love the atmosphere at Taverne Johann, the menu changes quite often and is really seasonal. The atmosphere is cozy and you’ll get delicious food without the stiffness. I really like their salads.

Markthalle
Markthalle is not a restaurant in itself, it’s an indoor food market. A great place for a quick bite, with lots of different world cuisines and stalls. The vibe is great and you’ll see much more than food - it’s a fun place to get inspired.
Tip: Dabbawalas Indian Kitchen & Flavors of Jerusalem were fantastic
